The book is about a girl called Davey Wexler living with her family in Atlantic City, when her father gets shot by some burglars. Davey, her mother and her brother go to Los Alamos to Davey’s aunt Bitsy and her uncle Walter to stay there for a few months. Davey’s mother has got depressions. Davey hasn’t got a very good relationship to Bitsy and especially to Walter, who quarrels a lot with her and once hits her. Davey meets Wolf, a young man when she is alone in the canyon, she falls in love with him and they do a lot together. Wolf tells her that his father will die and Davey also meets Wolf’s father, when she works in the hospital. Davey also has to go to school, where she meets Jane and they become friends, but Jane makes Davey really worried because she’s an alcoholic. At the end of the book Wolf’s father dies, Davey’s mother feels better again and Davey and her family go back to Atlantic City, where they move into a new apartment.

Setting

Nearly the whole story takes place in Los Alamos in the US. Just on the beginning and in the last chapter it takes place in Atlantic City (also US).

Atlantic City: Atlantic City is the City where Davey lives before her father dies and after the time in Los Alamos. There her father had a little shop before his death in which he also gets shot. Her best friend Lenaya and her boyfriend also live there.

Los Alamos:  In Los Alamos Davey’s family stays after her father’s death. It’s much smaller than Atlantic City and a lot of scientists work there and try to build better atom bombs. Aunt Bitsy and Uncle Walter live there and Walter is also a scientist.

Bitsy

Bitsy is Davey’s father’s sister and the wife of Walter. She is of course also sad that her brother dies but happy that his family come to her and Walter. She really tries to have a got relationship to the two children and really gets along with Davey’s little brother Jason. They bake a lot of cakes and cookies together. She also cares about Davey’s mum and goes with her to book clubs, parties or other small events to get her out of her bed and make contacts. She is very sad when Davey’s family goes back to Atlantic City.

Davey’s Mum

The death of her husband takes Davey’s mum really out of normal life. She always has a headache because of her depressions, she lays the whole time in her bed and nearly never leaves her room. She doesn’t really care about her children anymore and let Walter and Bitsy decide everything. She needs the longest time to get up again, but at the end of the book she is ready to start into a new part of her life.

The conflict between Walter and Davey

Walter is always very worried about everything and wants to decide everything in Davey’s life. Davey hates that. When he says bad things about Davey’s dad, Davey slanders him and he hits her. After that Davey doesn’t speak to him for a long time and never really forgives him.

The conflict between Davey and her mum

Davey’s mum doesn’t really care about Davey anymore and doesn’t listen to her. That makes Davey very angry but at the end of the book Davey’s mother says sorry to her and they have a very good relationship again.
