India – Marie Hummer 5b

India is in the south of Asian. Its capital is New-Delhi. It borders Pakistan, China, Nepal, Buthan, Myanmar and Bangladesh. For a long time India was ruled by British East India Company and after that by the Britain’s. It was one of the British colonies until 1947.

Mahatma Ghandi was the leader of the Indians who fought for their freedom in Britain. But he didn’t want to do that with violence. He got the independence for his country in 1947 but only at a price. India was divided in two separate states: India and Pakistan.

Mother Teresa first taught small girls in a convent school but after some time she left it and began to live among the poor. She asked for help and many people sent her money or other presents and the city gave her a house where she began to work with twelve other nuns. In 1979 Mother Teresa was awarded the Nobel Prize and she died in 1997.

British people were always very unfriendly to Indian families in Britain and blamed them for things like unemployment, bad housing etc. The Indian families were very disappointed about the Britain’s because it was the British government that wanted them to come there.

Bollywood is the nickname given to the Indian film industry. Bollywood makes up to 800 films a year. It started in 1899 and its biggest audience outside India is in Britain. Bollywood films are really colourful with lots of singing and dancing. Its biggest problem is piracy, because many people copy illegal Bollywood films and show them to other people for free.

Many children in India work and don’t go to school. They work as bidi-rollers, brass workers, whistlemakers etc. They only get very less money and work in very bad conditions. Some of them get even violated or ill by their work. Many of them have to get up very early in the morning to go to work and work until late in the evening. They have no time to play or enough money for a good education.

In India you can’t get portable water out of the faucet like we can in Austria. Indian people have to buy water in the supermarket. The problematic thing is that some people can’t afford that and have to drink dirty water.
