Blood Diamond – summery
Marie Hummer, 6B
Blood Diamond is a film by Edward Zwick with Leonardo DiCaprio, Djimon
Hounsou and Jennifer
Connelly which takes place in Sierra Leone, Africa,
at the time of the civil war. It is about the RUF, child soldiers and the trade
with the blood diamonds.
Fisher Solomon Vandy and his son Dia are going through
their village in Sierra Leone when rebels from the Revolutionary United Front
called RUF attack it and kill and hurt a lot of people. Solomon’s wife and his
daughter can escape and his son gets caught by the rebels to fight as a child soldier.
Solomon gets also caught and has to work at a diamond mine near Kono that
belongs to the RUF. There he finds a really big diamond and hides it between
his toes. As he tries to hide it in the near the mine a controller finds him
but Solomon doesn’t get shot because the government attacks the mine in this
moment and retrieves it. All of the workers have to go to prison.
At the prison Solomon meets Danny Archer. He is a
smuggler who brings diamonds from Sierra Leone to Liberia and he got caught.
Danny Archer heard about the big diamond and wants to make a deal with Solomon.
He tells him that he will find Solomon’s family if Solomon shows him were he
hid the diamond. The RUF attacks the city were the prison is situated and in
this chaos they manage to escape together.
Danny meets Maddy Brown. She is a journalist who wants
to write about the blood diamond. Together with her Solomon and Danny try to
find Solomon’s family. They find Solomon’s wife and daughters at a refugee camp
in Guinean. His wife tells Solomon that his son was caught by the rebels.
I really like this film. It has elements of a typical
Hollywood film like some of the action scenes and the love story. On the other
hand it shows the situation of the Africans. How they live in fear of the RUF,
how horrible the attacks of the rebels are and how cruel they use children as
soldiers. And it shows really good how Solomon suffers.
