Could a day start better than with a trip on a road which winds through golden fields? The farmer whom I will work for has already been waiting for me at the bus stop when I arrived. Seeing this picture of the man leaning calmly at his tractor and the mountain tops in the background already gave me the feeling that I finally really arrived. Fortunately he told me to take place on the trailer topped with straw bales. Not that I wanted to avoid conversation right from the start but sitting in the hay and letting sun shine in my frozen face (it is already quite cold here) was everything I could ask for, super tired from the noisy and hectic Vancouver.

But wait a minute. I don’t want you to think that I am relaxing by combing some sheep. Work started actually a bit earlier than I expected. In the informative lessons you hear super often how hard things will be but trust me it will get harder than expected. The tractor stopped, I nearly fell from the straw bales and then got lovely welcomed by the farmers family and nearly all relatives who just accidently passed by. The last interaction with another person was that the servant gave me a shovel and the shortest explanation possible for barn mucking.

Sitting at the dinner table, relaxing after hours of work I completely understood why I they gave me this simple task for the first day. Listening to them showed me that animals don’t just have to be feet and stroked. Some are ill, some pregnant, some just freak out when it comes to letting them out on the meadow. The servant was busy the whole day checking the shit of one old cow who behaves tiredly and calmly recently.

Tomorrow they want me to look after geese in the morning until they are finished with repairing the barn. I know this is a not often asked question, but if anybody of you out there has experiences with looking after animals (preferred geese) please write your tips in the comments. I will definitely need more explanations than the servant offered me today!
